'She's wearing Becky's skin': Beyonce, Kim Kardashian and Taylor Swift are mocked as the internet reacts to the Met Gala gowns with hilarious memes

The Costume Institute Gala 2016 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, held in New York on Monday night, was one of the most glittering fashion events of the year.

And, as A-list starts stalked the red carpet in their dazzling gowns, most of them perfectly reflecting the Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology theme, the internet watched on at home... and found the funny side in many of the looks.

As the night progressed, hilarious and creative memes erupted on social media, with the likes of Beyonce, Kim Kardashian and Taylor Swift receiving the brunt of the mockery, but all in good humour.

Along with the shot, showing a close-up of her squeaky Givenchy gown, the text read: 'She's wearing Becky's skin. The accents on the dress... are her teeth, as confetti. I get it, Bey.'

Last week, with the release of her new album Lemonade, the superstar singer sung about a woman with whom her husband Jay Z had allegedly cheated on her with, referring to the mystery woman as Becky.

Foiled! And another pointed out that Kim's sparkling dress made her look as though she was wrapped in tin foil

This prompted mass speculation over the identity of Becky, and of course meant that all eyes were on Beyonce, 34, as she walked the red carpet at the Met Gala.

Another meme shared on Instagram and twitter pointed out how much the Formation hitmaker's dress resembled the cell structure of the endoplasmic reticulum, giving those who are fond of both biology and celebrities a giggle.

Elsewhere on the web, silver-clad Kim was also in the line of fire. The reality TV star donned an eye-catching shimmering sequinned Balmain design, and it led to her being compared to Star Wars droid C-3PO.

Kim, 35, also had her eye-catching ensemble compared to tin foil, while Kanye's pale blue contact
lenses were also mocked in another meme.

Taylor, 26, opted for a divisive short metallic dress with cut-outs, and one canny social media fan was quick to replicate her look at home with foil and what appeared to be bin liners.
Other comparisons made with dresses included a feather duster for Rita Ora's dazzling frock, a full-skirted plumage-inspired creation by Vera Wang. Another funny meme showed her next to a peacock.
